What an awesome way to spend Valentines Day evening!
While it was -12 c plus the wind chill outside – forty six sup loving people made the trek to West Edmonton Mall last night for the first ever Easy Rider SUP demo in the wave pool of the worlds largest shopping mall.
We had an hour and a half of flat water paddling for the newbies and then had waves for the final ninety minutes.
While the flat water was fun for all – the waves proved a bit challenging. Being man made and coming in very tight sets of four, it took a little bit of time until everyone had them figured out. By the end of the evening most were getting full rides.
Thanks to all those that came out, and I am already looking forward to the next demo on April 11.
Thanks
Warren

Wow – What a trip.
The First annual Easy Rider SUP Safari to Southern California was a great time.
Here are a few highlights and some photos from the trip.
First two days were spent at the Action Sport Retailer trade show in San Diego.
Although I have been to this show many, many times it was great to see the show through the eyes of someone new to that world.
Starboard had a great booth with a whole bunch of the brand new boards for 2010.
Gaute from Starboard hand carried over many of the new boards that are still in the prototype stage.
The new Short board is a surf machine – made of a super secret carbon lay up – it weighed in at just over 10 pounds – insane.
The Surf Race was there in the new Brushed Carbon construction – it is a 12′ board that is well under 20 pounds – equally insane.
Also there was the AST construction of The NEW race board – - it’s design is taking SUP race boards to a whole new level.
After the Trade show we toured some surf shops, as the weather in “Sunny San Diego” was anything but.
We did manage a good couple of hours out flat water paddling on Mission Bay – where we all switched boards many times.
Then is was up the coast to do some surfing.
We got one good day in at Santa Monica and one awesome day just south of Santa Barbara.
Many great meals, a bunch of drinks and a ton of great conversation made it a fantastic trip.
Thanks to Scott for Trident for setting up the boards, to Gaute from Starboard for a ton of great information, to Wardog from Surfing Sports in Santa Barbara for guiding us, to Delmer for having someone other than my brother to talk to
and to Declan from Trident for his visa card!
Start planning for next year – I have a ton of great ideas!

We just received a new shipment Pro Teck Fins from Surf Co Hawaii.
These fins are made of urethane and are totally flexible.
Great for paddling on the river where you might hit rocks and also a must have for our up coming surf sessions in the West Edmonton Mall wave pool!
Available in 7″ and 9″ main fins as well as FCS system side bites.

Easy Rider is offering Free Storage of your new board until spring!
Since we are deep in the time of frozen water – I figured I would offer up Free storage of any new stand up boards that are purchased between January 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010.
This way you can get the board you want and not have to worry about where to store it until the ice melts.
Call or stop by the Easy Rider for more information and to check out all the new 2010 boards in stock.

Easy Rider is proud to announce the addition of Jimmy Lewis SUP boards to its line up.
Jimmy Lewis has been shaping surf boards since 1968, sailboards since 1978 and Kiteboards since the mid 1990’s.
Jimmy has found his new passion – Stand Up Paddling.
While several of his models are designed for the surf, he is also focusing on flat water and race board designs.
Easy Rider has already received several of the new boards and they are already in the store.

SInce the water around Edmonton is now solid, I thought I would share a couple of sessions from last summer.
I managed to paddle in the fountains of City Hall and the Provincial Legislature.
Although I had many strange looks and comments – mostly from security guards – no arrests were made!

Here are a few shots I took with a Go Pro camera.
It was a “nice” day for northern Alberta in mid November so I figured I would do a bit of a “downwinder”.
Air temp was about -2 celsius with the wind chill and the water was right around zero.
The camera worked great.
You can set them to take a photo every 2 or 5 seconds, or it can shoot video.
It takes a 2 GB card and that will get you either about 700 photos or just under an hour of video.
It is amazing that so many cool features can be packed into such a small case.
They are waterproof to 100 feet and you can get a ton of different mounting kits for them.
The brand new Go Pro HD cameras have just hit the store as well. They are just over $100. more than the regular ones and they shoot up to 1080p. The HD version will also shoot video at 60 frames per second – so you can do full slow motion!
Stop by the shop and check them out – just in time for Christmas.

I took what will most likely be my final outdoor paddle for the season yesterday.
Air temp was -11 Celsius and the water temp was below 0.
It was a really fun paddle – but the ice flows are getting really thick – up to a foot of solid ice.
I can no longer smash through them and spent a lot of time slaloming around them looking for a way through to open water.
The other limiting factor is the weight of the board – after a 45 minute paddle it ended up being about 50 lbs from all of the ice that formed on the deck.
Just figured I would share the stoke!
